Wider Achievement Pupils Celebrate Success On and Off the Pitch
Tue 1st April 2025
Last week the Rangers Charity Foundation hosted Wider Achievement programme participants for football tournaments at the Ibrox Community Complex.
Participants from 15 of the Foundation’s Wider Achievement schools took to the field across two days for seven-aside games with Hillpark Secondary School and Govan High School winning on days one and two respectively.
Our Wider Achievement programme has helped young people across Glasgow and beyond re-engage with their education to help them build a brighter future.
We work with a variety of schools to support pupils who may not be engaging optimally but could benefit from a different learning environment.
Pupils come to Ibrox Stadium one day a week to gain qualifications, get exposure to industry partners, vocational training and develop their skills.
Lourdes Secondary School pupil, Cole spoke after the tournament. He said:
“The tournament today has been really good and I’ve enjoyed being out of school for it.
“Now I have done my Nat 4 and 5 SQA Awards with the Wider Achievement programme, which the coaches have been supporting me through. They know me and they look after me.”
Following the conclusion of the tournament on the Friday, Rangers legend and Club Ambassador Lee McCulloch presented the winning team with a trophy.
Remarking on the tournament and the programme, McCulloch said:
“It’s been great to meet some of the pupils who have been in the Foundation’s Wider Achievement Programme this term and hear about some of their achievements. I hope they have enjoyed the day as a reward for all their hard work.
“Not everyone learns the same way so programmes like these means that the kids can have a different approach to getting the qualifications that are relevant to them.”
The Wider Achievement course is delivered within the Ibrox Community Complex which is a SQA Approved Centre.
This allows us to offer participants the chance to complete SQA qualifications recognising wider achievement and the development of skills, which will help learners to succeed in today’s world.
The course recognises the life and work skills that come from a wide range of activities which can include sport, mentoring, voluntary work or fundraising activities — whether they take place at school, college or elsewhere.
Foundation Community Programmes Manager, Jamie Duncanson, added:
“The SQA Wider Achievement programme is a key initiative of the Foundation, providing secondary school students with a vocational pathway within their school curriculum. Currently, around 230 students from 20 schools across seven local authorities participate in the programme.
“Each week, these young people spend a day at Ibrox throughout the school year, completing 100 hours of SQA-accredited awards. Importantly, they also gain valuable vocational experience through connections with our employability partners.
“Today is a celebration of their dedication and effort throughout their time with us.”
“Our highly qualified team, made up of full-time charity staff and community coaches, has done an exceptional job delivering the programme this year.”
