Walking Football Fundraiser Tournament Takes Place At Ibrox Community Complex

Tue 10th September 2024

The Rangers Charity Foundation was delighted to host its first ever Walking Football Fundraiser Tournament a the Ibrox Community Complex on Sunday.

Eight teams registered for the competition, including several participants from the Foundation’s range of community programmes as well as a team from Oswald’s Bar in Glasgow City Centre.

The squads were also joined by Rangers legend, Gordon Durie, for the afternoon.

After a group stage each team played another game with two the two best teams facing off in a final. The overall winners of the day were the FFIT 4 Life team who beat the Walking Football Over 50’s A side after a tense sudden death penalty shootout.

Speaking ahead of the final match Gordon said:

“I would’ve loved to have been out there and getting involved in it but I’m carrying a wee knock just now but it’s all about the people out there and the Foundation as well.”

“Today’s been about raising money for a good cause and that’s the main thing.”

“Over the years the Foundation has done fantastic work, and it shows that when you look at the number of people that have come out here today to show support.”

Walking Football is a fast-growing version of the sport which is non-contact and allows participants to play the game they love without the same risk of injury or level of exertion, whilst still boosting fitness.

John Thomson from the winning FFIT 4 Life team also said:

“I thought today was great and it was really well organised too. It was such an enjoyable day and fantastic for us that the weather held out as well.”

“I play here on a Monday at Team Talk Football and a Thursday at Walking Football and it’s the Foundation that run that and being able to come here has been great for my mental health so it’s great that many participants have fundraised and are helping give back to a charity that’s helped a lot of us so much.”

Foundation Support Engagement and Event Executive, David, Henson added:

“First of all, I want to thank everyone that signed up and played in today’s event. The funds raised from today will go toward supporting our vital work with our charity partners and in the community.”

“Special thanks as well to Gordon for coming along to watch and for handing out the medals too.”

Our free Walking Football programme for anyone aged 50 and over is a great way to get more active and enjoy the social aspects that being part of a club can deliver.

The sessions take place at the Ibrox Community Complex, 80 Hinshelwood Drive, Glasgow, G51 2XD on Thursday’s at 11am.
