Visually Impaired Football Programme to Continue with Funding Support from The Powell Family Foundation

Mon 21st April 2025

The Rangers Charity Foundation is delighted to announce that our Visually Impaired Football programme will continue to run through to 2026 following the award of grant funding from The Powell Family Foundation.

Our Visually Impaired Football sessions are completely FREE and open to young people of all abilities, aged between 8 and 18.

Visually Impaired FootballOur specially trained coaches tailor the sessions to the needs of each individual participant to ensure that they are fun for all involved. Parents and carers are also more than welcome to participate in our sessions.

Rangers Charity Foundation Chief Executive, Connal Cochrane said: “The Rangers Charity Foundation is committed to diversity and inclusion and, thanks to the support of The Powell Family Foundation, we are delighted that we will be able to provide access for even more children to our Visually Impaired Football programme.

“We also know from feedback that not only does it provide the young people with a chance to access supervised football and build new friendships, but it allows parents and carers to connect and spend time together.”

Dad Alan, whose 13 year old son Thomas attends the programme said: “It has been very positive for Thomas to meet other young people who have similar challenges to him and makes him feel less alone with respect to his disability. He feels more confident in communicating with his peer group and it’s been great to meet other parents in same situation and share tips and experiences with them.”

The Powell Family Foundation was set up by Rodney Powell, and is funded by the generous legacies of Rodney and his mother Pat. The Powell family has had a long connection with the world of vision impairment, going back nearly a century. Visually Impaired Football

Their mission is to support vision impaired children, young people and adults aged 25 and under, to improve their emotional and physical well-being, increase their knowledge and skills, and support their independence through the provision of grants to individuals and charitable organisations.

The Powell Family Foundation was then established in June of 2020 with a focus on providing grants to support vision impaired children and young people.

Colin Whitbourn, Executive Director of The Powell Family Foundation added: “We are really pleased to be supporting Rangers Charity Foundation and their excellent Visually Impaired Football programme. It is so important for children and young people who have a vision impairment to be able to take part in sporting activities. Naturally, it’s good for physical and mental wellbeing, as well as learning new skills and the children also have the opportunity to socialize and make new friends.”

Visually Impaired Football takes place at Super Soccer on Scotland Street every other Sunday from 12pm – 2pm. More information here, or to register, email: rangerscharity@rangers.co.uk or call 0141 580 8775.

The Rangers Charity Foundation would also like to thank Better Breaks for previously funding this programme.
