Foundation Hub School Pupils Head South for Action-packed Day Ahead of Manchester United vs Rangers.
Wed 12th February 2025
Pupils from our Hub in The Community School, Govan High, were treated to an action-packed day as they travelled south to meet up with pupils from the Manchester United Foundation.
In partnership with Govan High School, this innovative programme was rolled out in January 2018 based on a model delivered within the Manchester United Foundation.
The Foundation has a full time Community Hub Officer role in local schools to mentor vulnerable pupils in relation to their school attainment, attendance, deliver class projects, support transitions from primary to secondary school and also be a universal support within the school.
A bus picked the lucky pupils up from Govan High at 7am on Thursday morning before they made the four-hour journey south of the border.
Arriving at the Cliff Training Ground for lunchtime the pupils quickly got changed into their boots and shin pads for some friendly football matches against the Manchester United Foundation’s Street Reds participants.
Pupils were also treated to a Club history presentation as well as some team building activities before capping off their visit to Manchester by taking in United vs Rangers at Old Trafford. Cyriel Dessers gave our pupils something to cheer about late on before United captain Bruno Fernandes nabbed three points for the home side at the death.
Despite the late loss, Logan had a great time he said: “We left at 7am to head to Manchester. It was a four hour drive and when we got there, we were shown around the training ground and had lunch. We played alongside one of the Manchester schools. After playing some games, we got back on the bus and headed to Old Trafford to watch the game.”
“I really enjoyed watching the game even though Rangers lost. Everything about it was great and it was a good experience to remember.”
Scott Smith took on the original role of the Community Hub Officer in early 2018 at Govan High School. The programme was so successful that two other schools followed suit in 2020: Knightswood Secondary and Drumchapel High School. In 2022, Whitehill Secondary School became the latest Hub School. Following the expansion of the initiative to three further schools, Scott is now the Community Hub Coordinator for all three Hub Officers.
Scott added: “The trip was a great opportunity to keep building on our relationship with the Manchester United Foundation and an amazing opportunity for our young people to travel to a different city and meet other people. They got to know a little bit about the history of one of the biggest football clubs in the world and they absolutely loved the experience of being at The Cliff training ground, and taking part in various team building activities.”
“It was good to celebrate the success of our Hub in the Community programme having initially planned our delivery model around the successful implementation of the project in Manchester.”
In 2024 we hosted a group of young people from the Manchester United Foundation where they participated in a tournament against all four of our Hub in the Community schools before heading for a tour around the iconic Ibrox Stadium.
