Alex Rae Announced as New Foundation Trustee

Thu 26th August 2021

The Foundation is delighted to announce that former Rangers mid-fielder Alex Rae has become a trustee of the Rangers Charity Foundation.

As a player Alex was hugely popular and was part of the team which won the league and cup double in the ‘Helicopter Sunday’ season of 2004/05. As a player at the club he was actively involved with the Foundation and has continued his support since.

“I sat down with Connal and Jacqueline to get an overview of what the Foundation does and I was blown away,” he explained, “I knew about the Foundation’s work with the charity partners and some of the community projects, but I wasn’t aware of the breadth of the work and the number of initiatives on the go.

“I was involved with the charity from the start when I came to Ibrox, so it was an easy decision to take on the trustee role when it was suggested.”

Alex will not only be a recognisable figure on the board but will also bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from his own charity, Second Chance Project, which he set up in 2007 for those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.

“Obviously, I have some experience with being involved in a charity from my work with The Second Chance Project,” he added, “and I can see that some of the key ideas behind the Foundation’s work – addressing poverty, improving health, promoting education, addressing homelessness – are really in sync with the kind of things I see at Second Chance. It’s a natural fit.

“I was brought up in the city. I have experience of the issues surrounding addiction, and I think I have a sense of people’s needs.  Hopefully I can bring some of that, and my links with Rangers, to the table and help the Foundation.”

Alex is already showing that he will be hands-on in his new role at the Foundation by getting involved over the last few weeks in the Bears Up Ben Lomond challenge and the 2021 Refugee Festival Football Tournament.

“I’m really looking forward to representing the Foundation and getting involved in different projects,” he explained, “I went down to the Refugee Football Tournament recently to give out the prizes and I’m also climbing Ben Lomond with Foundation supporters on Sunday 5 September, which should be a great day out. I’m looking forward to having a few laughs with everyone who has signed up.”

Foundation Chair Jacqueline Gourlay added, “We’re delighted to have Alex on board. He has been a supporter of the Foundation for many years and was always willing to help in any way he could.

“He brings a unique perspective to the board being as a life-long supporter of Rangers, as a former player, as a former professional manager and as a founder of a charity himself.

“Alex is never shy with an opinion! We look forward to some of those helping the Foundation move forward in it’s mission as a force for good on behalf of the Rangers Family.”
