Earlier this week the Foundation welcomed the Community Action Team and firefighters from Govan Amber Watch to Ibrox to deliver a fire safety workshop to our Wider Achievement participants.

School pupils were then treated to a walk round of a working fire appliance where they were given the opportunity to try on some equipment and test some of the tools that firefighters use when on the job.

Our Wider Achievement programme has helped young people across Glasgow and beyond re-engage with their education to help them build a brighter future.

We work with a variety of schools to support pupils who may not be engaging optimally but could benefit from a different learning environment.

Pupils come to Ibrox Stadium one day a week to gain qualifications, get exposure to industry partners and develop their skills.

Speaking after the workshop, Foundation Community Executive, Nicole Pullar said:

“It was absolutely fantastic to have staff from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) visit Ibrox today. Fire safety is an important issue that everyone should have the opportunity to learn about so we really appreciate the Community Action Team coming out here to pass on vital tips on the matter.”

“Having the fire appliance come out as well was great. Some of the pupils that are here today might still not have a clear idea about what they want to do later on in life so having staff from the emergency services talk to them could help inspire them into something they may not have thought about previously.”

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone from the SFRS that gave up their time to come out and visit us.”

Our Wider Achievement programme is delivered within the Ibrox Community Hub which is a SQA Approved Centre.

This allows us to offer participants the chance to completed SQA qualifications which recognise wider achievement and the development of skills which will help learners to succeed in today’s world.

The course recognises the life and work skills that come from a wide range of activities which can include sport, mentoring, voluntary work or fundraising activities — whether they take place at school, college or elsewhere.

There are a number of SQA Awards and other qualifications from SCQF levels 1 to 6 which are suitable for a wide range of learners that we can deliver.

Foundation Community Programmes Manager, Jamie Duncanson also added:

“Days like this are fantastic for our Wider Achievement pupils. It’s important that we give them important life advice as well as learning opportunities when they’re with us.”

“The Foundation’s SQA Wider Achievement Programme provides an additional resource to the secondary school curriculum providing a vocational learning experience that better prepares young people for the world of work.”

“We have delivered the course to a record number of schools and participants this year with 21 schools from five different local authorities all taking part.”

“I’d like to thank Nicole for organising the visit today too because I know that a lot of hard work has gone into the planning of it.”
