Hub School Tournament Held at Ibrox Community Complex
Mon 11th March 2024
The Ibrox Community Complex recently played host to the Foundation’s Inter-School Hub Tournament for the first time.
The brand-new surface allowed S3 pupils from all four Hub Schools (Govan High School, Drumchapel High School, Knightswood Secondary and Whitehill Secondary) to play eleven-aside games with each school being able to play against each other.
After a tight group stage, it was Knightswood Secondary vs Whitehill Secondary in the final. It was a close affair with Knightswood just edging the contest and taking home the trophy after a 1-0 victory.
As part of a Community Hub model, originally adapted from the successful Manchester United initiative, a full-time Foundation Community Hub Officer is based in each school to work with pupils from all year groups as part of groups or on a one-to-one basis. They support with the transition from primary to secondary school and into positive destinations when pupils are ready to leave.
With the combined efforts of all four Community Hub Officers, the tournament was a resounding triumph.
Reflecting on the tournament Knightswood Community Hub Officer, Mark King said:
“I thought the full day was a success. Having all four Hub Schools come together for an event like this it’s brilliant. It gives us and the pupils a chance to continue to build more relationships and being able to do things more often together is a real positive.”
“Days like this give the pupils an opportunity to get out of the classroom and get involved in sport and get active which is always a good thing because they don’t always necessarily get the chance to do that.”
“Knightswood coming away with the trophy is obviously a huge bonus as well because the young people will be buzzing and the teachers will be buzzing too but having a successful tournament like today can lead to bigger things as well. Being part of a team will help some of these pupils build on their skillset and teach them how to function as a group.”
On top of delivering special events outside of the school environment, the Hub in the Community programme also delivers in the classroom. All four Community Hub Officers work with pupils to support attainment whilst also delivering SQA qualifications. Incentives are designed to help boost attendance and to support them in their learning.
