Hub in the Community School Govan High Spend The Day At Manchester United

Last month, one of the Foundation’s Hub in the Community schools, Govan High School, travelled down to visit the Manchester United Foundation for an action-packed day in Manchester.
Pupils from Govan High who participate in the Hub in the Community programme were offered the chance to head south of the border for the amazing opportunity.
As part of a Community Hub model, originally adapted from the successful Manchester United initiative, a full-time Foundation Hub Officer is based in each school to work with pupils from all year groups as part of groups or on a one-to-one basis.
The Hub in the Community programme provides an innovative approach to support the school in raising attainment, increasing positive post school destinations, enhancing transition links from primary to secondary school and creating a universal impact in all areas and year groups, to help expand the young people’s full potential through education.
Scott Smith took on the original role of the Govan High Community Hub Officer and now oversees the delivery of the programme across the Foundation’s four Hub in the Community schools.
As part of the trip to Manchester, the pupils were asked to write a diary about their experience and how the visit went.
- 6am – Meet at Govan High School
The trip began with an early rise to get the bus down to Manchester. Govan High pupil, Ethan, wrote: “First we got the bus down. It was early and I was tired and cold but it was a good laugh. The bus journey was very long but it was one hundred percent worth it.”
Ethan’s brother Aaron also enjoyed the journey. He wrote: “Travelling down was so good. We were all buzzing for the day.”
- 10am – Arrival at The Cliff training ground
Once the pupils arrived at the training ground they were immediately in action as they prepared to play in a tournament.
Another pupil, Marshall, wrote: “We arrived at The Cliff at 10am and played in a tournament. We played six games, winning three and losing three so we didn’t play the best but it was fun.”
Ethan wrote: “The tournament was great and the teams we faced were really good.”
- 2pm – Tour of Old Trafford
Straight after finishing the tournament, the pupils were treated to a quick lunch before heading for their next activity, a tour of the famous stadium.
Marshall wrote: “When we went on the stadium and museum tour, we saw all the trophies and it was really cool. The stadium was giant, and the trophies were massive as well.”
Ethan also enjoyed the tour, writing: “The tour was great. We realised that Manchester United have achieved so much.
- 7pm – Watch Manchester United U21 v Arsenal U21
The day showed no signs of slowing down. After another quick pit stop for dinner, the pupils were invited to take in a match at Old Trafford and they were delighted to be watching the game.
Marshall wrote: “The game was so good. The game finished 1-1 and it was a very even game.”
- 9pm – Leave Manchester
With their day behind them the pupils then headed for the bus to make the journey back to Glasgow.
Summarising his experience of the day Ethan wrote: “Overall the trip was amazing and I loved it.”
His brother Aaron also enjoyed it and wrote: “The whole journey and experience was so good.”
The trip was organized by Govan High Community Hub Officer, Scott. Reflecting on the visit he said: “The visit to the Manchester United Foundation was a great success and we would like to thank the staff who made it such a memorable day for our pupils.
“It was amazing to see so many students who are benefiting from the Hub in the Community programme coming together from different areas and enjoying what was a unique and special experience. This was a day that these pupils will remember forever and will also have helped to further build their confidence.”
Gordon Reid, Principal Teacher of Physical Education at Govan High said: “The recent football development tour to Manchester United provided our pupils with an amazing experience. The young people have really benefited from the excellent partnership working between the Rangers Charity Foundation and the Manchester United Foundation.”
