Alex Rae Launches Hub In The Community Programme At Former School

Wed 28th September 2022

Alex Rae visited his former school to mark the launch of the latest Rangers Charity Foundation Hub in the Community programme in the East End of Glasgow.

The former Rangers midfielder and current Foundation trustee unveiled the plaque at Whitehill Secondary School on 6 September 2022.

The event officially marked the introduction of a full-time Foundation member of staff based in the school.

Community Hub Officer, Jamie McMillan, will offer tailored support in relation to school attainment and wellbeing by delivering a wide variety of programmes and provide a constant, familiar point of contact for staff, pupils and their families.

The success of the programme, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, has led to Whitehill Secondary becoming the fourth school to have Foundation Community Hub Officers based full-time on campus and plans are in place to develop the project even further.

Alex said: “The work that the Foundation do is incredible! This work is what the club is all about.

“The school can see the benefits which Jamie brings to the table and the facilities and what support we can present these kids is invaluable.

“For me, coming from the East End of Glasgow, trust would have been a big thing for me back when I was a kid. So, to have a full-time member of staff on site, who is not a teacher, and is someone who you can touch base with and build a relationship with, can really help these pupils going forward into their teenage years and as adults.

“I was reminiscing when I came through the doors today. I hadn’t been back here in 37 years so it’s brought back a few memories of when I was a boy here.”

The Foundation, which has a range of over 20 community programmes, reaching over 8,000 people of all ages in the last year alone, has implemented a strategic focus to support the school in raising attainment, increasing positive post-school destinations, enhancing transition links from primary to secondary school and creating a universal impact in all areas and year groups (with a focus on broad general education) within the school, to help expand young peoples’ full potential through education.

Deputy Head Teacher Leigh Anderson, said: “We were delighted to welcome Alex Rae to Whitehill Secondary School, a place he knows well as a former pupil.

“He created such a buzz amongst the pupils!

“We are looking forward to be working in partnership with the Foundation and welcome Jamie as the new Community Hub Officer here.

“Jamie is a very welcome addition to our team and will play an important role in helping to enhance the support in place for some of our more vulnerable young people.”

A Community Hub Officer is now based in Govan High School, Knightswood Secondary and Drumchapel High School thanks to the work of the Foundation’s Senior Community Executive, Jamie Duncanson and the wider Foundation team.
