Rangers Charity Foundation celebrates its partnership with Unicef UK

Mon 15th May 2017

The Club, Rangers Charity Foundation and Unicef celebrated our special partnership at Ibrox on Saturday.

Bucket shakers collected donations from fans at the turnstiles, a specially created video was shown on the big screens and a card display in the Sandy Jardine Rear before the match depicted a Rangers scarf with Unicef written in the middle.

Unicef became the Foundation’s first ever International Partner at the beginning of the 2008/09 season and the Foundation and the Club has been working to raise funds and awareness of the charity’s work with some of the world’s most vulnerable children ever since.

Since then, fans’ donations have helped pay for one million life-saving vaccinations from a range of deadly but preventable diseases, as well as supporting education projects in India and the refurbishment and equipping of vital heath centres in West Africa.

Most recently, the Foundation donated £25,000 as part of an exciting initiative to protect children in emergencies through the One Goal For Children project.

Launched last year, the project aims to raise money for Unicef UK’s Children’s Emergency Fund, which exists to allow the charity to respond immediately when children are in danger from events such as war, famine and outbreaks of disease.

Speaking after the match, which was broadcast in the UK by Sky Sports and around the world on Rangers TV, Unicef UK’s Executive Director Mike Penrose said: “Our partnership with the Rangers Charity Foundation is helping to give vulnerable children around the world the life-saving support they need when an emergency strikes.

“We want to say a huge thank you to Rangers fans for their on-going support for Unicef UK. Today’s match gave fans a special reminder of how together, we are making a big difference to children’s lives.”

Rangers Charity Foundation Director Connal Cochrane added: “Our partnership with Unicef UK continues to grow from strength to strength.

“From making significant contributions to health and education projects around the world to our current One Goal For Children initiative we are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Unicef.

“Saturday was an opportunity to highlight the importance of the partnership to the Rangers fans and to say thank you to them for their continued generous support.

“We look forward to continuing our work with Unicef helping to keep children safe.”

Unicef estimates that there are 535 million children living in countries affected by emergencies – that’s one in every four children in the world today.

In 2016 the charity helped 13.6 million children get access to safe water, provided 6.4 million children with access to education and treated 2.2 million children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

This year, with the help of Rangers fans and the Rangers Charity Foundation Unicef is attempting to assist 48 million children in 48 countries.

It aims treat 3.1 million children for severe acute malnutrition, help 18.9 million people access safe water and help 9.2 million children access education.
