Foundation Director Connal Cochrane accepted a top award from the Ministry of Defense recently on behalf of the Club and Foundation in recognition of our continued support of the Armed Forces.

The prestigious award was presented in the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle and follows the Foundation and Club formalising their long-standing commitment to the Armed Forces and services-related charities by signing the Armed Forces Covenant last season. 

The Foundation has donated over £125,000 in cash to services related charities over the last five years, as well as in-kind help to dozens of organisations that support serving personnel and veterans and cash donations from Stadium can collections. 

Charities that have benefitted from donations include Erskine, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Combat Stress, Poppyscotland, SSAFA, RNRMC and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The Club has donated over 1500 tickets over the same period, and the Foundation has run 4 Glasgow Veterans United courses with Glasgow’s Helping Heroes and SSAFA, ensuring veterans have the assistance they need to get back on the path towards better health, self-confidence and employment in civilian life.

Every year the Foundation helps to organise an Armed Forces Day event hosted by the Club, which incorporates community engagement activity delivered by all three services and a can collection in support of our Armed Forces Partnership, which selects services-related charities every year to assist.

The Club recently held a respectful Remembrance event at Ibrox, including a wreath laying ceremony, the observance of a minute’s silence prior to kick off and a can collection in aid of Poppyscotland.

Connal Cochrane commented: “It was an incredible honour to receive this award from Lieutenant General Richard Hugee CVO CBE at Edinburgh Castle on behalf of the Foundation and Club.  Rangers and the Armed Services have always had a special relationship and the fans are incredibly supportive of our range of initiatives connected with helping veterans and serving personnel.

”We are proud to have been able to help so many charities connected to the services over many years and I know the Club and Foundation’s commitment is steadfast.  This is of course just one aspect of our powerful work in the community and with a range of charity partners.”     

Royal Naval Regional Commander Captain Chris Smith said: “We have worked closely with the Club over the last few years and have been impressed with their commitment to the Armed Forces.

“The Charity Foundation works tirelessly to raise funds for Service and Veterans charities. The signing of the Armed Forces Covenant earlier this year clearly demonstrated the continued support that the Club and Charity Foundation have towards our Armed Forces and we are absolutely delighted that these efforts have been recognised.”
